Schools, youth facilities and sports clubs are not safe places for young LGBT people or those who are thought to be! “Tranny” or “gay pig” are the most common swear words in schoolyards, derogatory “jokes” usually go unchallenged and especially when young people have the courage to come out, they often experience discrimination, bullying or social isolation. It is not uncommon for young people who have already come out to be afraid of such reactions to become less involved in their clubs, or for their performance at school to deteriorate rapidly
together education is committed to constructively counteracting prejudices against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans*, inter* and non-binary people. The volunteer team members make an important contribution to acceptance and a better social climate through professional educational workshops. In personal encounters, the participants receive an authentic image of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans*, inter* and non-binary people. Through a variety of methods, they are supported in openly addressing and questioning clichés and fears.
The workshops are carried out by a young and committed team of volunteers. They have been prepared for this challenging task through qualification measures and are continuously accompanied by a pedagogical specialist. Workshops take place on site or in one of our youth facilities in the cities of Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Mülheim an der Ruhr and in the districts of Wesel and Kleve. Appointments and individual preparation are made with the responsible specialists.
